Elsie Lindsay (Gabryluk)
February 16, 1929 - November 12, 2019
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Elsie Lindsay. Elsie was in her 90th year when she died peacefully at the Lake of the Woods District Hospital with her immediate family at her side.
Elsie was predeceased by her husband of 55 years, Dick (Richard), parents (Alex and Lena), sister Helen Abbey (Bert), and brothers Bill (Marie, and son Paul), Ray and Don Gabryluk.
She leaves to mourn her sons, David and Robert (Joni), grandchildren, Trina, Krystal (Eric) Coursey, Amanda (Ryan) Larson, and great-grandchildren, Aidan, Quianna, Tyrus and Ella Coursey. In addition, she leaves behind her sisters-in-laws, Marlene and Marilyn (Gabryluk), and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Elsie was born, raised and married in Kenora, and lived here her entire life. Residing at her principal residence for 62 years, she moved to Benedickson Court fourteen months ago.
A meticulous homemaker known for her wonderful Ukrainian dishes, baking and preserves, Mom’s gifts in these areas will be missed. In addition to Mom’s volunteer work in her earlier years, she gardened, made pottery, bowled, and worked part-time as a lunch supervisor at Evergreen School.
Mom had a strong faith in Jesus and was faithful in praying, reading her Bible and doing a devotional from Our Daily Bread. She drew strength and comfort from spending time with the Lord in this way.
Elsie was a member of the local Legion Branch 12 Ladies Auxiliary and the Notre Dame Du Portage Church. She also sang in the church choir and was a dedicated, participating member of the Catholic Women’s League.
She was blessed with a strong circle of friends, some of whom gathered weekly over the last 50 years for coffee, conversation and support.
Our Mom was a very unique lady in many ways. She always insisted in presenting herself at her best. She was blessed with a sharp mind and directed her care up until her passing.
We thank Dr. Vaudry for his many years of care and compassion for Mom. Special thanks also to the doctors and nursing staff of the Lake of the Woods District Hospital, particularly during her final days. We also thank the many staff and caregivers of Benedickson Court for their attentive care of Mom.
Immediate cremation has taken place and a Celebration of Life will take place at Notre Dame Church on December 4, 2019 at 11:00 am, presided by Earl Johnson (Deacon). Lunch to follow. Internment with immediate family will take place at a later date.
We love you Mom and although we weren’t ready to say good-bye, we take comfort in knowing that ‘it is well with your soul’.
Mom will always be remembered for doing it her way … and she did. Good-bye Mom. Good-bye Nan. Rest in peace.
You are my hiding place; you will protect me from trouble and surround me with songs of deliverance.
