Dagny Spencer

Dagny Spencer was born June 24, 1924 and passed away peacefully on April 25, 2020, 95 years of age, at Pinecrest Home.

Dagny was the daughter of John and Erika Wallin.  She was born in Keewatin, Ontario at the family home on an island on the Winnipeg River. Sadly she never knew her father, as he died from drowning before she was born when his horse and sleigh went through the ice.

Mom met Dad when she was 16.  Dad and his best friend, Abby Marchant, would walk from Kenora to Keewatin just to visit Mom and her friend, Jean.  When Dad left for the war, Mom would send letters and care packages to him.  When he returned, they were married a year later on June 21, 1947.  They celebrated 72 years of marriage on June 21, 2019.

Mom’s growing up years had its challenges.  Living on an island meant breaking through the ice to get water for cooking, bathing etc. and also to get across to town with the row boat for school in the Spring and Fall.  They struggled a lot as her mother was left a widow with 7 children and they had very little money.  They grew their own vegetables and had cows and pigs for food. Many a cold winter’s night they would sleep with a hot iron at the end of their beds.

Through the years, Mom spent her days as a homemaker.  She loved to bake and there was always fresh cookies or a square to be found in the kitchen.  In the Fall, she would be busy preserving beets, pickles, raspberry jam, etc. from the garden Dad had lovingly attended to all summer.  Her favourite pastimes included curling, which she did into her 80’s and she also volunteered for over 30 years at the Pinecrest Home Tuck Shop which is the home she lived in her final days. She enjoyed watching curling on TV every chance she could get and also the Blue Jays (except for Troy Tulowitzki, who she thought was the downfall of every game).  She enjoyed travelling with our Dad to the Celebrations in Holland for the veterans and many trips to Hawaii.

Mom was a very generous, proud and fiercely independent woman.  Her determination to deal with life head on was instilled right from when she was young due to her life circumstances being so challenging. She was never afraid to work hard.  With our Dad, they built the house that they lived in for nearly 70 years.

Dagny is survived by her children: Wayne (Linda) and Debbie (Harold) Laninga, grandchildren: Dana, Kris (Candice), Dylan (Tanya), Kyle (Jennifer), John (Mandy), and Lauren, great grandchildren: Kenzie, Kale, Omayja, Corey, Madison, Gabe, Kiena, Kenley, Phoenix, and Vienna. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Dagny was predeceased by her parents John and Erika, her husband, Darcy, son, Daryl, and siblings: Alfie, Innar, Signe, Ann, Bill, and Harry. From Dad’s side, the Spencers: father-in-law and mother-in-law, Joseph and Delia, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law:Bertha, Wynard, Claire, Violet, Doreen, Vivian, Lois, Gayle, Aime, Leonard and Allan.

At this time, we would like to thank all those who touched our Mom’s life.  We would also like to express sincerest thanks to Pinecrest Home for the care she received the past 1 ½ years.  Special thanks to niece Maureen, who kept a loving eye on her while she was there, Mike Limerick and nurses Gillian and Joan who cared for our Mom in her last hours.

Due to COVID-19, we will be planning a Celebration of Life in the future.
