In Loving Memory

Gordon Kainer

It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of our loving husband and father Gordon Kainer on July 7, 2017. He passed away peacefully surrounded by family at Lake of the Woods Hospital after a valiant fight with heart disease.

Gord was born in Regina on January 18, 1942 to Andrew and Margaret Kainer. In 1962 he met the love of his life Shirleen (Bahr) and they were married and remained lifelong soulmates for 55 years. “Flash Gordon” as he was affectionately known by his family for his urgent need to “get er done!” had a great love for his family. There were always a dozen roses waiting for Shirleen on their anniversary. He was always there to give advice and lend a hand with whatever help you needed. He was an exemplary father figure for his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He lived life to the full. Gord had a great sense of humour and playfulness in life with a twist of mischievous usually followed by his eyebrow raising gestures and look of surprise. His family was his life especially the kids who he enjoyed chasing around house. He had a love of nature and all her creatures big and small.  Gord was always busy and could often be found in the garage tinkering away on something.

He is survived by his loving wife Shirleen, his children Kathy Kainer and Paul Kainer(Jade Tan), his grandchildren Jim Kainer (Liz) and Rebecca Ness Saxhaug, his great- grandchildren Lexus, Kali, and Maxis, his sister Grace(Tony) Giambattista.

At Gord’s request there will be no service just a gathering of family to celebrate his life.

Special thanks to the staff of Lake of the Woods, Thunder Bay General, and Hamilton General Hospital.  Messages of condolence can be emailed to

He will be greatly missed by all who knew him but he left behind a legacy of good memories for us to treasure and reflect on with a smile.
