John Miclash – December 26, 1950 - March 26, 2018

Surrounded by family on March 26, 2018, John Miclash passed away peacefully in his sleep, following a brief battle with cancer.  He was predeceased by his father Leonard William (Butch).  He is survived by his mother June and step-father Harvey Cormylo of Ladysmith BC., his two sons James and Michael and their mother Val of Winnipeg, brothers Frank and Randy and nephew Kyle of Kenora. He is also survived by his grandsons Michael Jr., Nicholas and Ryder, his Uncles George (Florence) and Bob of Kenora and his Aunt Jackie of Calgary as well as his Aunt Joan of Winnipeg.

John grew up at Rabbit Lake where he developed a love of the outdoors. Many will remember his snowmobile racing experience where he went up against such famous drivers as the Villeneuve brothers of Quebec.

His second passion was fishing on Lake of the Woods both summer and winter.  His first was the many motorcycle adventures throughout North America with his sons. He was a member of both the Lake of the Woods Harley Riders and the Canadian Army Veteran Motorcycle Unit.  His love for sports was evident in his ability to watch 4 games at the same time on his big screen television.  Coffee at Tim’s was a daily ritual where many local issues were resolved during these sessions.

John was employed by Boise Cascade at the local paper mill following graduation from Beaver Brae Secondary School. Over the years he volunteered his services to his local union.  During his years of both employment and union business he developed many long lasting friendships. In his retirement he enjoyed school bus driving and was referred to by the students as Santa Claus.  John was always available to lend a helping hand at various events or provide needed repairs out of his backyard shop. John had a special place in his heart for the efforts of the Kenora Special Olympics organization. He and his fellow riders raised funds and made many contributions over the years.

The family would like to thank Dr. Bowerman, Dr. Pedersen and Dr. Brad Kyle and the third floor nursing staff of the Lake of the Woods District Hospital. They also wish to thank Ken Alcock for his guidance and support.

Cremation has taken place and a celebration of John’s life will be held on Friday April 6, 2018 - 1 pm  at the Kenora Royal Canadian Legion Club Room.

In lieu of flowers the family wishes to suggest donations be made to the Lake of the Woods District Hospital Foundation or Kenora Special Olympics.
