Eva Melnyk (Kochayda)

Eva Melnyk passed away peacefully at the Lake of the Woods District Hospital on April 28, 2017 at the age of 97.  She was predeceased be her husband Bill in 1967.  Eva leaves behind 3 children, David, Maryanne Barnard (Wayne) and Theresa Chadyk (Bob), 6 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.

Eva came to Canada with her parents from Mukanie Poland at the age of 7.  Her family didn’t speak a word of English, but Eva was taught the language in school so she went home and taught her parents.  Eva met her husband Bill in Winnipeg while attending Saint Mary’s Academy, studying English and journalism.  They married and settled in the north end of Kenora where they raised their family.  After Bill died at a very young age, she raised the 3 children on her own, instilling respect and strong family values.

Eva was very involved in her community.  She was a member of the PTA, Health Unit, Catholic School Board, and the Kenora Housing Board.  She also advocated to have the Gardner Block built for seniors.  Eva was a strong Catholic and president of the Ukrainian Catholic Women’s League for a number of years.  She was instrumental in compiling and printing the first Ukrainian cookbook which is still in great demand today.  She was also named “Woman of the Year” in the eighties.

Eva’s last home was Birchwood, where she enjoyed her view of the lake.  She was a bingo player and she attended every church service held.  Eva will be missed by many but has left behind wonderful memories and her blue sparkling eyes will be watching down on us.

A private family service will be held at Birchwood Terrace.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Birchwood Activity Program.
