Steven "Smitty" Mitchell Smith left us suddenly on August 9, 2017 to join in spirit his Dad Gerald, Mother Shirley and Brother Brian. He was born a beautiful soul on January 26, 1962 and leaves to cherish his memory, siblings Sharon (Kirk), Pam (Louie), Randy (Hayley), Laurie (Johann), Gayle (Kevin), Wade, Brent, Linda (Kurt) and Dale (Marcia). Steven also leaves behind his son Mitchell whom he loved very much and was so proud to call son. Steven was also an uncle and great uncle to many nieces and nephews.
Steven had a happy childhood swimming, fishing and hanging around with friends and family in West Bay. He was a good athlete, excelling at any sport he put his mind to, cross country running, and baseball, where as a pitcher he was known as "Stubbs". He had one of the most wicked slap shots in hockey. Playing defence he scored many goals from the blue line. His favourite hockey team was the Bruins.
Steven was a hard worker, always going over and above what was expected of him on any job site.
Steven led a hard and difficult life, but he always maintained a positive attitude and had a smile on his face and a wave for everyone. He has left behind many friends who loved him for the friendly man he was.
Whenever Steven came over to Keewatin he made a point of going to his Dad's bench in West Bay to share a beer, a peaceful moment, and to have a conversation with him. He loved and missed Dad very much.
Family and friends gathered in West Bay to remember Steven and to say goodbye on Sunday, August 13. Steven's family would like to say thank you from the bottom of our hearts for the condolences, fond memories and kind words. You have all given us different and new memories of his life and we will always be grateful.
We will forever love and miss you Steven. Although our hearts are broken with the loss of you, when we gather as family we will remember you fondly.
