It is with great sadness that we the family announce the passing of
Ledger McKellar on Easter Sunday at the Lake of the Woods District
Hospital, six days before his 92nd Birthday. Ledger was born on April 22nd,
1925 in Keewatin, Ontario and resided there his entire life. He received his
education at Keewatin Public and area High Schools. His career began at
The Five Roses Flour Mill in 1942 until 1956. From there he went to the
Kenora Board of Education and worked as a custodian at the Kenora-
Keewatin High School until 1959 and then at the Keewatin Public School
where he remained until his retirement in 1990.
During his long life Ledger was a very active member of the I.O.O.F. Lodge,
served on the Credit Union Board and was a past-president of Kenora
District Credit Union. He was on the Keewatin Non-Profit Housing Board
for 28 years and served as Vice-Chairman for 18 years, recently receiving a
lifetime service award for his long time commitment.
Ledger was predeceased by his loving wife Mary in 2015 after 64 years of
marriage, his daughter Shirley Ann and son-in law Wayne Ponton, infant
granddaughter Amanda, mother and father Dave and Anna McKellar, two brothers and their wives Hector (Jessie) and Douglas (Dorothy) and his
sister Margaret and husband Keith Affleck.
He is survived by two daughters, Barbara (Gary) Hall of Kenora and
Candace McKellar (Jeff) of Parry Sound Ontario, 7 grandchildren; Angela,
Jennifer, Deanna (Kevin), Tiffany (Rick), Marina (Mike), Michael, and
Lana-Rae (James), and 4 great-grandchildren; Ethan, Carter, Roksana, and
Jane, as well as numerous brother-in-laws and sister-in-laws, nieces and
nephews.
The family would like to thank Drs. Wiebe and Wehner and the nurses
from Para-Med, Club Day Away, as well as friend Linda Brennan and
brother-in-law Harry for making it possible for our dad to remain in his own
home for the past two years. Thank-you also to Dr. Ghazelli and third floor
nursing staff for their excellent care during his short hospital stay.
A celebration of Ledger’s life will be held on Thursday, April 27, 2017 from 11am until 2pm, at Kenora Travel Lodge in The Banquet Room.
Private family interment of ashes to follow.
If friends so wish, donations to The Lake of the Woods Hospital Foundation
would be appreciated as Ledger was always an avid supporter, or to a charity of your choice.
Rest in peace Dad. We will miss you.
