MERREDEW, Robert Walter - The family of Bob Merredew are very sad to advise of his passing on September 7th 2018 at Pinecrest Home for the Aged. Bob was born in Winnipeg on 1 August 1923 to Charles and Edith and was the youngest of four children. The family moved to Keewatin when he was a teenager and he immediately loved the small town on the Lake of the Woods, where he was content to spend the rest of his life, except for his years of service during World War ll. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force as his 18th birthday approached and began to put his mechanical skills and resourcefulness to good work in the 126th Tactical Air Force, servicing planes and keeping them flying, even when supplies were scarce. After an initial posting in England his squadron crossed the Channel to Normandy shortly after D Day in June 1944, followed by postings in France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany before arriving home in September 1945. Shortly afterwards he met the love of his life, Janet Godfrey and they began a long and happy marriage on 26 October 1946, initially living in a little log cabin on their beloved property on the lake in Keewatin. After a number of years and the arrival of two children, Bob began to put his excellent carpentry and building skills to good use in building a new family home. Throughout his working life, Bob became known for being able to fix things, attention to detail and good customer service, whether running the family business at Keewatin Boat House, working at Canadian Tire, or in various car dealerships. Following retirement in 1983, Bob and Janet enjoyed travelling to see family in Canada and England, as well as sightseeing in the southern USA, swimming, boating and relaxing by the lake in the summer. Bob's family meant everything to him and he was never happier than when he was surrounded by his children and grandchildren at family gatherings, where he was often called upon to work his magic with the barbeque, getting everyone's food cooked just the way they liked it. He was devoted to his wife Janet and went through a sad and difficult time when she died in 2001 after 54 years of marriage. He is predeceased by parents Charles and Edith, brothers Chuck and Bill, and sister Ethel. He is survived and sorely missed by his son Damon (Carol) of Keewatin and daughter Florence (John Bradley) of London England, four grandchildren Stephen (Vanessa) Merredew of Red Deer, Sarah and Laurie Merredew of Toronto and Matthew Bradley of London England, and two great-grandsons Caeden and Theoren of Red Deer. We are grateful to all the staff at Pinecrest for their great care and attention during the last 9 years of Bob's life. A memorial service will be held at Pinecrest on Monday, 17 September at 11 am with Reverend Robert Wittmeier presiding, with a luncheon to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Pinecrest Auxiliary c/o 1220 Valley Drive, Kenora ON P9N 2W7.
